About ECA

The History of ECA

When ECA came to Audubon Street in 1973, it was not the cultural hub that it is today. Now, we are located in the heart of what’s known as New Haven’s Audubon Arts District, and we’re happy to say that our students contribute greatly to the community.

Through the intensive study of music, dance, theatre, writing, and the visual arts, we’ve established
meaningful relationships and provided a foundation for our students to go on to do incredible things after their time here.

Notably, ECA Creative Writing Alum, Sam Levinson, is the creator of Euphoria, an American teen drama television series that now has two seasons. Lauren Ambrose, a Theatre Alum, is now a Broadway actress and was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical at the 2018 Tony Awards for her performance as Eliza Doolittle in “My Fair Lady.” The movie Mr. Soul! was written, produced, and directed by Dance Alum Melissa Haizlip, which won the Peabody Award for Best Documentary in 2022.

We at ECA believe in the capacity of the human spirit to create, connect and transform. ECA students learn — at no cost to them — alongside practicing artists and peers as they discover their creative potential.

At ECA, we question and collaborate, play and perform, as we explore ourselves and our world.
